Why Choose BSLISScotland?
BSLISScotland will support your organisation to be more accessible and inclusive.
Promoting equality of opportunity and reducing social exclusion is at the very heart of what we do here at BSLISScotland. The communication barriers that often exist between hearing and Deaf people can make it difficult for you to deliver your services and difficult for Deaf people to access them. As a result Deaf people can lose out on vital services including health, employment and education. By providing an interpreter it is possible to avoid these difficulties and at the same time improve service access and equality of opportunity. If you employ a Deaf person an interpreter can enable you to give them the same opportunities and benefits as your other employees, while at the same time supporting him or her to do their job without the practical issues that can arise from communication barriers and cultural difference.
BSLISScotland will help your organisation to meet its duty with regard to anti-discriminatory practice.
There is very often a legal duty placed upon employers and service providers to provide a BSL/English interpreter. This is usually the case when, for example, a staff member or service user would be substantially disadvantaged when compared with another person that does not have a disability. Indeed, since the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act in 1995 there has been increasing legal expectations placed upon employers and service providers with regard to taking positive action to avoid anti-discriminatory practices. In our experience there has been an encouraging shift in opinion amongst service providers and employers in recent years; perhaps prompted by government initiatives to promote social inclusion backed up by the legislation mentioned above. As a result, these days we are less likely to be asked ‘why do I need to provide an interpreter?’ and more likely to be asked ‘how do I go about booking an interpreter?’ We welcome this development as good news for Scotland’s Deaf communities and of course for our organisation.
