We are the leading independent sign language interpreting service in Scotland, providing a professional, efficient, friendly and flexible service. We work throughout Scotland and regularly in other locations in the UK and overseas. To our customers we have become known simply as ‘BLISS’ and Sign language users have adopted the sign for ‘smile’ when referring to us.
Our talented team members are individually registered in Scotland with Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (SASLI), which is the language service professional body. BSLISScotland is registered with this organisation at a corporate level too. This is known as agency registration. Only those organisations that can satisfy SASLI’s eligibility criteria can become a registered agency and so use the SASLI quality charter mark. We are proud to be the first organisation to do this and we proudly display the SASLI charter mark on this page. Our full-time interpreters hold the national (UK) occupational standard qualification or equivalent set out by the National Centre for Languages along with other complementary qualifications at graduate, post-graduate and higher degree levels.
BSLISScotland isn’t merely a broker, acting as a gatekeeper between you and the interpreter(s) who ultimately deliver services to you. We employ our own interpreters. Coupled with the qualifications our staff members hold, this sets us apart from most other service providers in Scotland. It means that your interpreter benefits from being part of a supportive and professional team and is accountable to an employer. It also means that if an interpreter is unavailable to undertake a given assignment, say through sickness, we will take responsibility for deploying an alternative interpreter. This saves you the stress and the hassle associated with trying to find someone at the last minute. If you have been in this position before, you’ll know that it’s always difficult and very often impossible to do. Our staff pool enables us to re-allocate assignments without it affecting you or your service. We do sometimes engage the services of freelance interpreters at times of exceptional demand and to provide last minute communication support in emergency situations. However, we only use certain trusted and tested individuals and rest assured, our full-time Quality Standards Officer makes sure that any interpreter dispatched by us is able to discharge his or her duties to the same high standard you would expect from BSLISS staff interpreter.
With the exception of ‘one off’ assignments for organisations that very rarely come into contact with a sign language user, our customers tend to re-book again and again. We regularly work with government agencies, local authorities, the NHS and private health care providers, employers, legal services, voluntary organisations, charities and national bodies promoting the interests of Deaf people. We have an enviable reputation for customer-focused services, reliability and quality, backed up by efficient administrative systems.
